When Do Postgraduate Courses Start in the UK?
UK postgraduate programmes are offered across three different intakes, each suited to different timelines and academic goals.
This is the primary entry point for the majority of Master's programs in the UK. It offers the greatest variety of courses and universities. For most international students, including those from Ghana, this is the traditional time to begin their postgraduate journey, as it aligns with the standard global academic calendar and provides the widest access to scholarships and campus facilities.
The January intake serves as a well established alternative for students unable to start in autumn. While the range of available programmes is narrower, a strong selection of courses particularly in business and technology is still accessible across many reputable institutions.
The May intake is the most specialised, available at a limited number of universities. It carries a restricted selection of programmes, and students are strongly advised to confirm availability with specific institutions before proceeding with their applications.
Regardless of the start date, universities host orientation sessions just before the term begins. These sessions allow international students to settle into their new environment and prepare effectively before their formal academic sessions start.
Short Note:
Ghanaian students should apply at least 6 months early. This gives you enough time to receive your CAS and complete your visa application without any rush.
