When Should You Apply for Scholarships in the UK?
Planning ahead is one of the best ways to improve your chances of securing a UK scholarship. Many scholarship schemes begin accepting applications before, or at the same time as, university admissions open, so early preparation is key.
National programmes such as Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships usually open between August and November for study in the following academic year. In comparison, most university-funded scholarships close between December and May, depending on the institution. Because funding is limited and competition is high, applying well before the deadline gives you a better opportunity to be considered.
Not every scholarship follows the same process. Some are awarded automatically to eligible students, while others require a separate application, personal statement, or supporting documents. Reviewing the eligibility criteria and application steps early will help you build a strong funding plan.
Short Note:
Kenyan students should begin preparing their UK scholarship applications 8–12 months before their chosen intake to avoid missing important deadlines and funding opportunities.
