When Should Nigerian Students Apply to UK Universities?
The simple answer is as early as your preparation allows, and for most students, that means starting the process 6 to 12 months before their intended intake.
For undergraduate courses, the main UCAS deadline falls in mid-January 2027 and applies to most UK universities. Applications for Oxford, Cambridge, Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary Science must be submitted by mid-October 2026, a deadline that is absolute and carry no exceptions.
For postgraduate courses, the timeline is more flexible, as applications are made directly to universities throughout the year. However, flexibility should not be mistaken for an absence of urgency here. Many popular master's programmes close their applications early once available seats are filled, and students who delay often find their preferred course no longer available by the time they apply.
Short Note:
Starting the application process on time is recommended. It gives students enough spare time to do everything properly, including the CAS and visa steps that follow an accepted offer.
What Is the CAS Timeline for UK University Applications?
The CAS process begins once an offer is formally acknowledged and the required tuition deposit is paid. Until both of those steps are complete, the university cannot begin processing the CAS.
For the September entry, the CAS issuance window typically runs from May to August, which gives a reasonable amount of time to get the visa process moving before the course starts. For January and May intake students, the window is significantly tighter, and any delay at the deposit or document stage can compress the visa timeline to the point where arriving on time becomes genuinely difficult.
Nigerian students must also book a TB test at an IOM-approved clinic in Abuja or Lagos before the visa application can be submitted, and standard visa processing takes three to four weeks. The students who sail through this stage without stress are always the ones who had their financial documents, academic certificates, and English language results ready before the CAS arrived, not after.
Short Note:
Proof of funds and academic documents should be ready before the CAS arrives. Waiting until CAS comes by might cause one to miss their intake after already securing a place.
