When Do May Intake Classes Begin in the UK?

May intake classes in the UK usually start somewhere between late April and early June, and the exact date depends on the university and the course. Unlike in September, there is no single, consistent start date across all institutions, so Nigerian students cannot assume their course begins in a particular week without checking first.

Most universities still run short orientation sessions before term begins to help international students find their feet. 

For May specifically, Nigerian students need to have travel, accommodation, the TB test, and visa processing all sorted well before the course date, because this intake has the shortest time frame of the three.

Short Note: 

Starting preparations at least six to eight months before the intended May start gives Nigerian students enough time to get everything done without running out of time.

What Is the CAS Deadline for the UK May Intake?

The CAS comes from the university after the offer is accepted and the tuition deposit is paid, and for May entry, it normally comes between March and April. That interval is short, and Nigerian students who are still gathering documents when the CAS lands will almost certainly miss the course start.

The visa application goes in as soon as the CAS arrives. With standard visa processing taking three to four weeks, the entire CAS-to-visa journey needs to be completed by April at the latest for a May start. There is no margin for delay at this stage.

  • WAEC or NECO result slip and certificate for undergraduate entry.
  • English language test results, such as IELTS, PTE, or equivalent.

  • Valid international passport.
  • CAS number issued by the university.
  • Proof of funds for tuition fees and living costs, kept for a minimum period of 28 days.
  • Tuition deposit receipt from the university.

  • TB test certificate from an IOM-approved clinic in Abuja or Lagos.
  • Parental consent letter for applicants under 18.

UK May Intake Entry Requirements for Nigerian Students

The requirements for the May intake are the same as those for the September or January intakes. Nothing really changes in terms of grades or English tests, just the start date. That said, don’t assume everything is the same everywhere. Always check the exact requirements on the university’s course page before applying, because they can differ depending on the school and the course.

Undergraduate

Requirements for a bachelor's degree in the UK:

  • WAEC or NECO certificate with at least five credits.
  • Completion of a recognised Foundation Year programme where WAEC does not meet entry requirements.
  • The minimum grades required by the individual university and course.
  • Proficiency in the English language, usually IELTS 6.0 and above, although some universities accept WAEC English C6.
  • Personal Statements.
  • Reference letter where required.
Postgraduate

Requirements for master's programmes in the UK include the following:

  • Degree certificate and transcript.
  • A bachelor's degree from a recognised Nigerian university, typically a second-class lower or above.
