When Should Nigerian Students Apply for UK Scholarships?
The short answer is earlier than it feels necessary. Most people start thinking about scholarships after they have already applied for a course, and by that point, the biggest opportunities are already gone.
Chevening applications typically open in August and close in early October, which is before most people have even finalised their university choices. The Commonwealth Scholarship follows a similar pattern. GREAT Scholarships are tied to specific universities and have their deadlines, usually running from around December through to April. University-specific awards vary even more widely, with some awarded automatically based on the application profile and others requiring a separate submission entirely.
The students who win scholarships are almost always the ones who started preparing months before the application window opened, not the ones who scrambled together an essay two days before the deadline.
Short Note:
Starting scholarship research at least eight to twelve months before the intended intake is not excessive. For Chevening and the Commonwealth specifically, the preparation involved goes well beyond filling out a form.
