Why Do Nigerian Students Choose Top-Up Degrees in the UK?

A top-up degree is one of the most practical options for Nigerian HNDs or diploma holders who want a full UK bachelor's degree without spending 3 years to get there. Students enter the final year of an undergraduate programme directly, and they graduate with a qualification that carries the same academic weight as a standard UK bachelor's degree.

Turns an HND or diploma into a bachelor's degree

Nigerian HND holders can convert their qualifications into a globally recognised UK bachelor's degree in just one year, saving both time and money compared to starting a full undergraduate programme.

Cost and Time Efficient

A top-up programme allows Nigerian students to achieve the same goal in one academic year, significantly reducing the cost compared to a full undergraduate degree.

Gateway to a Master's Degree and UK Work Rights

Graduating with a full UK bachelor's degree through a top-up programme makes Nigerian students eligible for a master's degree and qualifies them for the Graduate Route visa, giving them two years to work in the UK after finishing.

When Do Top-up Degree Courses Start in the UK?

Top-up degree courses in the UK are available across three intakes. September is the main intake and offers the widest choice of subjects and the most scholarship options.

January is a useful alternative for students who need extra time to prepare, and May is available at a small number of universities for select courses.

Nigerian students should always confirm which intakes are available for their chosen course directly with the university before applying.

Short Note:

Nigerian students planning for a top-up degree in the UK should start preparing at least six to nine months before their intended intake to allow enough time for applications, English language tests, visa processing, and travel arrangements.

What Is the CAS Timeline for Top-Up Degrees in the UK?

The university issues the CAS once a student accepts their offer and pays the tuition deposit, typically one to three months before the course start date.

From there, the student visa application goes online, and standard processing takes three to four weeks. Nigerian students who have their documents sorted before the CAS arrives move through this stage without unnecessary delays.

Short Note:

Do not wait for the CAS before pulling together your documents. The earlier you have them ready, the easier and faster the process will be.
