UCAS Clearing is not a last resort. It is a structured part of the UK admissions process that gives Nigerian students a second chance to secure a place at a university for the September intake. Why Nigerian Students Use UCAS Clearing for UK University Admissions?

Clearing is common because UK universities always have places left after the main application cycle closes. It is the widely used route for Nigerian students who missed the January deadline, received no offers, or didn’t meet the grades needed for a conditional offer to secure a place for the September intake. Many UK universities join UCAS Clearing each year, offering spots across a range of undergraduate courses. Students who are ready can quickly secure admission.

A Second Chance to Apply

Clearing gives Nigerian students who missed out during the main UCAS cycle a genuine opportunity to secure a place at a UK university before the September intake begins.

More Course Options are Available

A large number of UK universities list available courses through Clearing every year, covering a wide range of undergraduate subjects. The options are more varied than most Nigerian students realise when they go in.

Decisions Happen Fast

Clearing moves at an entirely different pace from the main application cycle. Nigerian students who prepare well can receive an offer within days.

When Should Nigerian Students Apply Through UCAS Clearing?

Clearing officially opens in early July, but Nigerian students should not wait until it opens to start preparing. The busiest and most productive period falls around A-level results day in mid-August, when universities release the majority of their available spots and course options.

Nigerian students who already know they will be using Clearing, whether because no offers came through or because they chose to decline their offer, should start researching available courses as soon as Clearing opens.

The most popular programmes and well-regarded universities fill their spaces quickly, and students who move first usually secure better options.

Short Note:

Preparation before clearing opens is the way to go. Students who have their documents, money, and course research ready before July are the ones who secure places before the best options disappear.

What Happens During UCAS Clearing?

Once Clearing opens, Nigerian students can search for available courses directly on the UCAS website using the Clearing search tool. When a suitable course is found, the student contacts the university directly, either by phone or through the university's clearing contact details, to discuss eligibility and available places.

If the university is satisfied with the student's profile and qualifications, they make a verbal offer. The student then adds the university as a clearing choice in their UCAS Hub, and the university formally confirms the place.

From that point, the remaining steps include meeting any outstanding conditions, paying the tuition deposit, and beginning the CAS process for the student visa. The timeline between a Clearing offer and the September course start can be tight, so having documents and finances ready before Clearing begins is not optional for Nigerian students.

Short Note:

Nigerian students should check the UCAS Clearing search tool regularly throughout the Clearing period.

UCAS Clearing Requirements for Nigerian Students

Entry requirements in Clearing are set by each university and course, not by UCAS itself. Nigerian students must still meet the academic and English-language requirements for the specific course they are applying to, even though Clearing moves faster than the main cycle.

Undergraduate

Standard requirements for applying through UCAS Clearing:

  • A minimum of five credits in WAEC or NECO, including English language and maths
  • Final results that meet the specific course entry requirements set by the university
  • English language proficiency result
  • An existing UCAS application, either submitted previously or registered during the Clearing period
Postgraduate

Clearing is mainly used for undergraduate admissions. Some universities may consider late postgraduate applications separately, but the process is handled directly through the university rather than through UCAS Clearing. Standard postgraduate requirements include:

  • A bachelor's degree from a recognised Nigerian university
  • Degree certificate and transcript
  • English language proficiency evidence
  • Personal statement or statement of purpose
  • Academic or professional reference letters
English Language Requirements

Standard English tests accepted by UK universities during clearing for Nigerian applicants:

  • IELTS Academic: typically 6.0 to 7.0, depending on the course and university
  • PTE Academic: typically 51 to 67
  • TOEFL iBT: typically 72 to 100
  • WAEC English C6 is accepted in place of IELTS by some universities; confirm directly with each institution before applying
